Don’t let the inconvenience of a backed-up kitchen sink ruin your day, here’s how to unclog the kitchen sink! Here at Affordable Service Plumbing & Heating, we’ve put together a list of helpful tips for the next time you encounter a clogged sink!

Remove the stopper: Most likely, whatever is clogging the drain has collected on the stopper. In order to clean it, you’ll have to first disconnect it and remove it.

Snake the drain: Once the stopper has been removed and cleaned, you’ll also want to snake the drain. You can use a hand snake from the hardware store. Use it to pull any obstructions out. You will have to repeat this process until the tool you’re using comes out relatively clean.

Check the P-trap: After you’ve reinstalled the stopper, check the p-trap. Place a bucket underneath to catch whatever water and gunk comes out, and then unscrew the connectors holding the pipe in place. Once the water and gunk have been dumped out, reattach the p-trap. You may want to follow up by pouring hot or boiling water down the drain to wash away any remaining obstructions. Affordable Service advises against using harsh commercial drain cleaners, they don’t do a thorough job, are often highly toxic, and they can damage your septic tank.

If these simple steps don’t result in a clear sink, the clogging may be deeper in the pipeline. If that is the case, call Affordable Service. We are available 24/7 to help you with your plumbing needs!
