In 2023, the regulations on energy efficiency ratings for air conditioner compressors as well as single package units, evaporator coils, gas furnaces and heat pumps will be affected by a change in the SEER2 regulations from the US Department of Energy (DOE).
All regions of the United States will have in increase equivalent to one SEER, which will use less electricity to produce the same amount of cooling. The Southwest region including New Mexico will see an increase from 14 to 15 SEER. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, a rating system that assesses the unit’s cooling capacity to power input. It measures the amount of cooling that’s produced divided by the electricity used, measured in watts.
New testing procedures will be used as well. In 2023, efficiency metrics for HVAC units will change and we’ll see them labeled as SEER2. This change will mean units will be manufactured to higher standards to be sold as of Jan. 1, 2023. The change is part of a six-year cycle where the DOE evaluates appliances and HVAC equipment to review if energy efficiency minimums need to change, in order to require more efficient units.
More efficient units will reduce the energy needed to operate the system but may have a higher, upfront cost because of the unit’s improved efficiency. The change will apply only to new systems; those in place on homes will not need to be replaced.
