What Causes My Swamp Cooler Not To Cool?

Living in New Mexico we often have high temperatures and low humidity in the summer. But as the monsoon season begins to settle in, our swamp coolers and the coolness of our homes pay the price. Swamp coolers are different than refrigerated air conditions because a swamp cooler uses simpler technology in its evaporative process. Swamp coolers are also extremely energy efficient and are very cost-effective as well. Affordable Service Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning, and Electric receives questions regarding swamp coolers and we are here to answer those questions!

-How does the swamp cooler work?

Have you ever been splashed on a very hot day and as it evaporates you are left with a cooling sensation? The same principle applies to swamp coolers. There is a large box and within the box are wet pads and a pump is used to continuously circulate moisture through the pads to keep them wet. The entire system is meant to moisten the air and cool at the same time.

-What climate are they best used in?

Swamp coolers are best used in climates that do not exceed 50% humidity during the warm months, and have temperatures over 80°. This is because as the humidity increases outside, your swamp cooler becomes less efficient because there is very little water to evaporate.

-What can I expect if I choose a swamp cooler over refrigerated air?

Our technicians at Affordable Service get asked this a lot and the answer is: it depends on the weather. Most of the time, our New Mexico climate provides us with a dry heat, ideal for swamp coolers, but when monsoon season is upon us, our humidity rises and the efficiency of swamp coolers plummet. If you choose to utilize a swamp coolers you’ll need to know the basics- keep a window cracked for proper air flow, make sure your up-ducts and vents are open, and be sure to change out and wet your pads at the beginning of every warmer season.
